Sodium-ion vs lithium vs lead-acid UPS: which should you buy?
There is no single best battery. This guide helps you pick by your site, your hours of backup and your budget, and says plainly when the cheaper choice is the right one.
| Sodium-ion | Lithium (LFP) | Lead-acid | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maintenance | None | None | Water top-ups and cleaning (flooded types) |
| Life | Long; Naxion states 4,000+ cycles | Long; several thousand cycles | Shortest; often replaced in 3–5 years |
| Size and weight | Bulkier than lithium, lighter than lead-acid | Most compact | Heaviest |
| Heat and cold | Wide range; Naxion states −30 to +70 °C | Good; charging limited near freezing | Weak in cold, ages fast in heat |
| Fire behaviour | Non-flammable chemistry (Naxion statement) | Safe in LFP form with a good battery management system | Acid and gas risk if neglected |
| Purchase price | Higher | Higher | Lowest |
| Track record | New to the market | Widely deployed | Longest |
Ranges for planning. The datasheet of the exact model in your quote is what counts.
Pick by your situation
Power cuts every week
Choose a sealed lithium or sodium-ion system. Daily cycling wears lead-acid fastest, and nobody wants to top up water weekly.
Rare, short cuts and a tight budget
Lead-acid can be the sensible choice. A smaller, cheaper system that fits your use beats a bigger one you do not need.
Hot plant room or an unconditioned room
Look at sodium-ion: it is built for a wider temperature range than lead-acid tolerates.
Very little space
Lithium is the most compact for the same energy. Check wall or floor space before you choose.
Air conditioner or motors on backup
Size the inverter for the start-up surge first, then choose the chemistry. Use the sizing calculator.
Solar now or later
Choose a unit with a solar input. Naxion states its all-in-one sodium-ion systems include a built-in MPPT controller.
Mistakes to avoid
- Buying on rated kVA alone, without asking for usable battery energy in kWh.
- Ignoring the start-up surge of an air conditioner, pump or compressor.
- Putting every circuit on backup, including heaters and geysers.
- Comparing a lead-acid price with a lithium or sodium-ion price without counting replacements and maintenance.
- Not asking for the warranty terms in writing.
